Art exhibitions in Mackay QLD featuring Australian artists

Discover unique showcases at Artspace Mackay alongside works by Australian artists

Artspace Mackay is set to captivate audiences with a trio of compelling art exhibitions, each showcasing the depth and diversity of Australian artists.

Opening on July 3, 2026, the Main Gallery will feature "Looking Out, Looking In: Exploring the Self-Portrait," a collection from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).

This exhibition delves into the evolution of self-portraiture, presenting works by renowned artists such as Nora Heysen, Tracey Moffatt, and Vincent Namatjira.

QAGOMA Director Chris Saines notes that the exhibition reflects on our contemporary "selfie" culture, offering a profound exploration of identity through art.

In the Foyer Gallery, starting June 27, visitors can experience Archie Moore's "Mīal," an abstract self-portrait that examines the politics of identity and racism.

Moore's work utilizes geometric paintings to represent parts of his body, each matching his skin tone, creating a powerful commentary on personal and societal perceptions.

Simultaneously, the Foundation Gallery will host Katelyn-Jane Dunn's "You sound just like your mother," a heartfelt tribute to the mother-daughter relationship.

Rooted in the landscapes of regional Queensland, Dunn's exhibition combines archival images, poetic text, and personal artifacts to navigate themes of loss and memory.

These exhibitions are part of the vibrant 2026 Mackay Festival of Arts, which runs from June 22 to August 9.

The festival transforms the region into a dynamic hub of creativity, featuring performances, culinary events, and immersive experiences that celebrate Mackay's rich cultural tapestry.

Artspace Mackay continues to be a cornerstone of the local arts scene, providing a platform for both established and emerging Australian artists.

These exhibitions offer residents and visitors alike an opportunity to engage with thought-provoking art that resonates on both personal and communal levels.
